Gene Patenting Debate

Students will understand that there is often controversy within science, inventing, and patenting. In groups, they will debate the legality of gene patenting in order to learn more about the patent process. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a realistic debate while gaining valuable information about patents and science.

Enter the Shark Tank

Students will learn the importance of pitching their inventions in order for others to learn about their product. Students will understand that "pitching" is a way to increase interest and sometimes get others to invest money so the invention can become more successful. They will write pitches about their inventions, then give and receive feedback in a scenario similar to the TV show Shark Tank. This will also help students prepare for the CT Invention Convention.

Engineering Cycle

Students will learn that the process of engineering and inventing is a cycle. They will come to understand that during their invention process, they will repeat steps multiple times. Students will work in groups to improve an existing invention. They will work at five stations that each represent a part of the invention cycle. They will see the steps broken down and be able to better understand how they cycle works.
